When we want to make observations about the data we are analyzing, we are often, if not always, turning to statistics in some fashion. Two broad categories of statistics are descriptive and inferential statistics. We are going to focus on descriptive statistics this semester, which is simply a way to describe the sample.
Often, the goal of an analysis is to tell a story about the data. This story is best developed through exploratory analysis, which is often done with descriptive statistics. This week, we will focus on understanding these foundational statistical skills.
